Katharine Drexel

Katharine Drexel was born on November 26, 1858 to a very wealthy family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother died when she was a month old. Her father remarried and Katharine's new mother was very generous and kind. Both of Katharine's parents opened their house to the poor three days a week and donated millions of dollars to the poor. They would go with Katharine's two sisters on long family trips all over the United States and Europe, which is how she discovered her calling. She saw Native Americans and African Americans suffering and being treated cruelly. She visited the Pope and he suggested that she become a missionary. Katharine became a nun and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Mother Katharine used seven million dollars of her money to build many schools for Native and Black Americans. St. Katharine Drexel was 96 years old when she died on March 3, 1955. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 2000. She was a holy person and we should think about her when we are selfish and try to be more generous like St. Katharine.
